6/16
We arose early (for this group) and piled in to a van and a car. Our face was set south. I was in the back seat of the Passat with Grandma and Emily. I couldn’t quite sit up straight because the ceiling was so low. The crew was loaded with Dramamine but I figured I’d ride it out. The ‘highway’ south is notorious for cookie (or taco) tossing. I read the paper we got from a man on the street for the first hour. Finished another book I had been read and started in on another when the hunger hit me. We hadn’t had anything for breakfast but had packed sandwiches for lunch. I put one down but it wasn’t the instant gratification I was looking for, so I put down the book, shot a few pictures out the window, and tried to sleep in a few awkward positions. We arrived after a little over six hours of traveling a road that did not have more than a half mile of straight road and from the top of mountains to the Pacific Coast.
We arrived and found our accommodations which were very, very nice. We are on the coast and can see one of the beaches from the back patio. I took my first solo excursion of this entire trip, going to checkout one of the surfing beaches that was nearby. The walk wasn’t far and the weather was nice (warm, but nice). I took up one of the wooden chairs in front of a shop and watched the works. There were boarders everywhere, about 20 in one spot and 10 on the other side. There were some talented boarders; it was nice to sit and watch with the sun falling behind some clouds as it dropped in the sky. I met a guy (Jimmy) who told me about a deal for surfing lessons and board rental. I said I would be back tomorrow.
I made it back to the house and we went to the main street to find some dinner. We went to a restaurant called Alicia where I had the Pulpo al Ajo with a Sprite (Garlic Octopus with Sprite). It was pretty good, and the arms where considerably large than in Veracruz. I bought a 2.5 liter Pepsi (hard to find in Coke Country) and we came back to the house. After a quick trip to the grocery store for breakfast foods, I settled in upstairs on the patio to read, write and watch the storm out over the ocean. There were some impressive displays of lightning and thunder you could feel in your liver. I went and got the camera and tried to shot some lightning but I wasn’t having much luck, then like many great pictures, I was playing around with the settings and having adjusted the speed setting so as to get some of the house to show up there happened to be a strike. I’m not going to lie this is definitely one of my best shots (and that’s saying something if you haven’t seen my pics).
I listened to a little music and then decided to sleep on the patio since it was significantly cooler than the bedroom. I fell asleep thinking about the depth of the ocean and what it feels like to surf.
